"The Music Copyist"
story by Spencer Holst, read by author

"I remember first telling the Bullfinch and Goblin story to Tui--before it was written down--in the kitchen of her apartment on 81st Street about thirty-five years ago. At that time I told and retold the story numerous times to friends, changing the story a little at each telling, polishing it, until finally I could tell it straight through without changing it. And at the point I wrote the story down. Sometime later I noted to Tui that the story was unusual in that there was a line in it ('How he sang!') that could be illustrated by a composer. Late in 1960 Ralph Zeitlin commissioned a solo recorder piece from Tui. When I heard she had been composing this piece (Sonata for Solo Recorder) for Ralph, I suggested that she make that piece the illustration of Bullfinch and Goblin. She agreed and began illustrating the story from the point at which she had arrived during the composition. Ralph first performed the sonata in January 1961."

The Music Copyist story is about an almost unbelievable musical performance in a small Ohio town directed by a conductor whose character was suggested to the author by that of Tui St. George Tucker.
