"A preliminary version of 'the work' took form as an oral improvisation done while viewing a student film in a workshop run by the film-maker and composer Phill Niblock. This more-worked version resulted from the continued involvements with the harmonics, thematic elements and verbal speed characteristic of the initial occurrence.

"The seven 'Bucchae Sonnets' derive many of their thematic elements from the teachings of Tantric Buddhism.

"'The joy of Sven Hedin' originally existed as a series of 3x5 cards, some white, some yellow; on the white cards I typed lines from books in one way or another meaningful to me, works by Trungpa Rinpoche, a text on mammalian physiology, a book by Rudolph Steiner, the 'Songs' of Milarepa; on the yellow cards I typed some new material as well as lines from previously published 'Tablets,' particularly 15-- which is also on this tape. I don't remember exactly why, but I cancelled the performance for which I'd made the cards, a New Wilderness concert evening. I had seen it as a group piece but point it worked very interestingly in a semi-random order of juxtapositions.

"'Bar Mitzvah for Adam' was written shortly before the ceremony which took place in a private apartment with a rabbi and a Torah. I read it to Adam at the end of a ceremony so that the poem became a part of the ritual." -Armand Schwerner
