about

During the summer of 1981 I was in residence at the Franklin Furnace in New York City. With a workshop of seven, the "Book of Bean" was built, a free standing light and sound installation with eight foot walk-in pages assembled around a center spine. As one proceeds through the book this tape is heard - the sounds of its very making; Craig Curly mixing ink, Caryl Emra feeding the horse, Yoshi Wada hammering together a beautifully mitered corner, or Jill Warzer tuning in with her chickens in Vermont. The pathways to the water are through the woods of the Hudson Valley; the restaurant is a crowded Spanish place in the upper Bronx. Jessica Higgins is the reader with me on both sides of the tape.
