Part One.

I Prologue. The creation of the world by the Air Spirit Mother and the birth of the eternal singer Vainamoinen.

II Vainamoinen defeats young Joukahainen in a contest of wisdom and magic singing; in exchange for his release, Joukahainen promises his sister Aino to Vainamoinen.

III. Vainamonen woos Aino. She runs home weeping. Her mother forbids her to grieve and tells her to rejoice and dress in fine clothes. Aino wanders through the backwoods to a strange seashore where she drowns.


Part Two.

I Untamo destroys his brother Kalervo’s clan and enslaves Kalervo’s pregnant wife. She gives birth to Kullervo, who immediately plans vengeance. Untamo tries to kill Kullervo, who immediately plans vengeance. Untamo tries to kill Kullervo but cannot. When he grows bigger, Kullervo botches all his work and Untamo sells him to craftsman Ilmarinen.

II Ilmarinen’s wife puts Kullervo to work tending cattle. She bakes a stone into his loaf of bread. Kullervo breaks his knife, the only momento from his family, on the stone. For revenge, he charms the cattle into wolves and bears. When she goes to milk, Ilmarinen’s wife is torn to pieces.

III Kullervo flees Ilmarinen’s and meets a green woman of the forest who tells him his parents are alive. Kullervo’s homecoming.
IV Kullervo bungles the jobs his father gives him, so his father sends him to pay the taxes. He meets and seduces a girl. In the morning, they learn they are brother and sister. She drowns herself. Kullervo rushes home to tell his mother, then goes to battle Untamo.
