"the triumph of the will"
"Tablets 15-19"

"'The triumph of the will' was composed, or rather, apprehended, from its inception on a Staten Island Ferry boat, going away from Manhattan to my home late at night, through its completion at my kitchen table in the early morning. I had not recently experienced this kind of secretaryship to my own poems: I still have a very special sense of the way in which this poem took on its form; some of its lines come back to me in difficult times.

"'The Tablets' derive their from from what remains of the archaic Sumero-Akkadian clay tablets, with their accidental lacunae and untranslatable segments, a 'scholar-translator' interposes his sometimes confusing presence intermittently during the course of these 'ancient' materials." -Armand Schwerner
